The Smart classrooms enable students to view and engage with the theory and interact with the subject in a variety of manners to grasp the concepts better.

There is a good infrastructure of laboratories in the college and there are separate labs in each department where practical is the part of the prescribed syllabus.

These labs are well equipped with necessary experimental facilities and are upgraded annually with the addition of equipments and other practical related materials. Maharajah’s College (Autonomous) offers world-class laboratory facilities of various Science groups etc.

Students work with state-of-the-art machines under expert guidance from an experienced and trained Faculty.

Laboratories are equipped with latest equipment to conduct experiments as mandated by statutory norms and more. The Laboratories have stocked to ensure that all students are accommodated comfortably.

The equipment will be updated and consumable will be replenished timely to ensure smooth learning of students. These are  well equipped and well designed with updated technology for conserned board/ University  syllabus.

The laboratories are used by all the practical subject students in the groups of 15-20 under the expert supervision of experienced teachers and with the logistic support of other lab staff.

The students are given optimum exposure of experimental learning and it is ensured that each student must know about the procedure and method to conduct the experiments.

  • The prosperity of any society or country is directly dependent upon the production and productivity of every activity of economical development.
  • Higher the Production rate, greater will be the prosperity and vice- versa. Every country has limited input resources. So, in a world of competition, the only golden rule to survive is Higher Production and Higher Productivity with the given input resources.
  • Sc group is applying scientific knowledge to find solutions for problems of practical importance. Maharajah’s College (Autonomous) provides means of acquiring practical exposure with:
  • Sate-of-the-art laboratories for students to enjoy learning through experiments
  • Lab manuals prepared by experienced in-house faculty members for easy and in-depth learning of experiments.
  • Equipment that also caters research needs of post graduate students & Ph.D aspirants.
  • Well maintained and regularly calibrated Equipment to serve in consultancy works and quality control & quality assurance assignments.

LAMINAR AIR FLOW CHAMBER:

A Laminar Air Flow (LAF) Chamber is a specialized workstation designed to maintain a sterile environment by directing filtered air in a uniform flow. It is widely used in laboratories for microbiology, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and research applications.

Types of Laminar Air Flow Chambers

  1. Horizontal Laminar Air Flow – Air flows horizontally from the back to the front.
  2. Vertical Laminar Air Flow – Air flows vertically from the top to the bottom.

Key Components

  • HEPA or ULPA Filter – Removes airborne contaminants.
  • Blower/Fan – Pushes air through the filter.
  • Pre-filter – Captures larger particles before they reach the HEPA filter.
  • UV Light – Helps in sterilization before usage.
  • Work Surface – Made of stainless steel for easy cleaning.
  • Glass Sides – Provide visibility and protection.

Applications

  • Microbiological experiments
  • Tissue culture work
  • Sterile pharmaceutical preparation
  • Electronic component assembly.

AUTOCLAVE:

An autoclave is a device used to sterilize equipment, instruments, and other materials by using high-pressure saturated steam. It is commonly used in medical, laboratory, pharmaceutical, and industrial settings to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores.

How an Autoclave Works:

Loading – Items are placed inside the chamber.

Sealing – The door is tightly closed to prevent steam from escaping.

Heating & Pressurization – Steam is injected, raising the temperature (typically 121°C to 134°C) and pressure (15-30 psi).

Sterilization Hold Time – The materials are exposed to steam for a set duration (e.g., 15-30 minutes) to ensure sterilization.

Cooling & Drying – The steam is released, and the chamber cools before items are removed.

Types of Autoclaves:

Gravity Displacement Autoclave – Uses steam to push out air, ideal for general sterilization.

Pre-Vacuum (High-Vacuum) Autoclave – Removes air before steam enters, ensuring deep penetration into materials.

Benchtop Autoclave – Small-scale autoclave for laboratories and clinics.

Industrial Autoclave – Large-scale models for high-volume sterilization and composite material processing.

Common Uses :

Medical & Dental – Sterilizing surgical instruments, dental tools, and reusable medical devices.

Laboratories – Sterilizing glassware, culture media, and biological waste.

Pharmaceuticals – Ensuring sterility of products and production tools.

Tattoo & Piercing Studios – Sterilizing needles and tools to prevent infections.

Food & Beverage Industry.

HOT AIR OVEN:

A hot air oven is a laboratory device used for sterilization and drying of materials using dry heat. It works by circulating hot air at high temperatures, typically between 50°C and 300°C, to kill microorganisms and remove moisture.

Uses of a Hot Air Oven:

Sterilization – Used to sterilize glassware, metal instruments, powders, and oils.

Drying – Removes moisture from laboratory equipment and samples.

Baking – Used in various industries like pharmaceuticals and food processing.

Heat Treatment – For testing heat resistance of materials.

Working Principle:

The hot air oven uses convection to circulate heated air uniformly inside the chamber.

It consists of:

Heating elements to generate heat.

Thermostat or temperature control to regulate the temperature.

Fan for uniform heat distribution.

Double-walled insulation to maintain internal temperature.

Sterilization Time and Temperature 160°C for 2 hours, 170°C for 1 hour, 180°C for 30 minutes

This method is effective for sterilizing materials that cannot be exposed to moisture, unlike autoclaving (which uses steam).
