Department of Social Sciences
Established in 1945, the Department of Economics at M.R. College (Autonomous) has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence and commitment to shaping future economists and policymakers. The Department of Economics has emerged itself as a reputable department with its academic and extracurricular achievements. The department offers B.A. Economics programs with three core combinations: H.E.P (History, Economics, Political Science), E.P.Ph (Economics, Political Science, Philosophy), and T.H.P (Telugu, History, Political Science). Catering to students with diverse career aspirations in Economics, the department provides a strong foundation in economic theories, analytical skills, and real-world applications.
In a significant milestone, the department introduced Degree Honors Programs in 2023, with major and minor (History and Politics) designed to deepen students’ knowledge and enhance their expertise in specialized areas of Economics. This addition underscores the department’s commitment to staying at the forefront of academic innovation and meeting the evolving demands of the global economy.
The Department of Economics is proud to be the largest among the Social Sciences at the college, offering Economics as a core subject in multiple combinations across B.A. and B.Com programs, furthermore our faculty includes distinguished researchers, with two members having an impressive record of publications in reputed national and international journals. Their contributions to academic research not only enhance the learning environment but also provide students with valuable exposure to the latest advancements in economics and related fields. Their expertise in guiding research projects and mentoring aspiring scholars further strengthens the department’s academic rigor and intellectual engagement. Their dedication, coupled with innovative teaching methodologies, ensures the holistic development of students, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork.
Beyond academics, the department actively promotes a vibrant work culture and team spirit, encouraging students to participate in seminars, workshops, and research projects. These initiatives aim to prepare students for diverse career opportunities in fields such as public policy, corporate management, academia, and entrepreneurship.
Join the Department of Economics and be part of a dynamic academic community that nurtures leadership, inspires intellectual curiosity, and empowers students to make a meaningful impact on society and the economy.
We are proud to introduce BOUGETTE, a dynamic platform designed to foster insightful discussions among staff and students on financial matters following budget presentations by both state and central government finance ministers. This initiative serves as a catalyst for exploring critical economic issues, enhancing financial awareness, and encouraging informed discourse on fiscal policies and their broader implications.
Our alumni association hosts regular gatherings of graduates at least once a year, fostering a strong network and lasting connections. In addition, we provide guidance to students preparing for competitive examinations such as the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), Indian Economic Services (IES), Civil Services, and APPSC Group I & II, among others, helping them navigate their academic and professional aspirations.
