Department of Biotechnology
INTRODUCTION OF DEPARTMENT -Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a branch of science that uses living organisms or their components for useful purposes. It combines biology with technology to develop products and processes beneficial to humans. The term Biotechnology was first introduced by Karl Ereky in 1919.Biotechnology is one of the fastest- growing interdisciplinary sciences. It applies biological knowledge to solve real-world problems. Living cells, Enzymes and biomolecules are the basic tools of Biotechnology. Traditional Biotechnology has been practiced since ancient times. Fermentation used in making curd, bread and wine is an example of early Biotechnology. Modern Biotechnology is based on molecular and cell biology.
department has a well equipped library with more than 200 books. The well maintained one laboratorie in 23 Computer systems are available.

Traditional Biotechnology has been practiced since ancient times. Fermentation used in making curd, bread and wine is an example of early Biotechnology. Modern Biotechnology is based on molecular and cell biology. It makes use of advanced techniques like genetic engineering. Biotechnology involves the manipulation of DNA and RNA. Recombinant DNA technology is a major milestone in Biotechnology. It allows genes to be transferred from one organism to another. This gene transfer helps in producing desired traits. Microorganisms play a vital role in biotechnological processes. Bacteria, Yeast and Fungi are commonly used in industries. Plant cells are used to produce valuable secondary metabolites. Animal cell cultures are used for vaccine and antibody production. Biotechnology aids in the diagnosis of diseases. Biotechnology is important in agriculture. It helps in developing high-yielding crop. Biotechnology helps in improving nutritional quality of food. Golden rice is enriched with vitamin A using Biotechnology. Biotechnology contributes to environmental protection. It helps in Bioremediation of polluted environments. Microorganisms are used to degrade toxic wastes. Biotechnology is useful in waste management. Industrial Biotechnology also called white Biotechnology. It involves the use of enzymes in industrial processes. Biotechnology plays a role in forensic science. DNA finger printing helps in crime investigation. Tissue culture helps in creating disease- free plants, genetic modification and conserving rare species.
