Department of Geology
The Department of Geology, established in the year 1953, is one of the oldest Geology teaching departments in India. Over the decades of years, students of this department have contributed substantially in various fields of Geology, held key positions in the Indian mineral industries/Organisations like Geological Survey of India, ONGC, CIL, IBM, MECL etc., R&Laboratories like BARC, NGRI, NIO, NCESS and many more and have admirably played pioneering role in organizing several university academic departments in the country and abroad. One of the notable alumni from this department Prof. M. Jagannadha Rao elevated as Vice-Chancellor of Adikavi Nannaya University, Rajamahendravaram for the period of 3 years from 2020-2023.
The department at present runs one Undergraduate (Honours) programme, In addition to the rich heritage of teaching at UG level. Department is equipped with a well-established Museum, an optical lab and a smart class room with different kinds of maps, wall posters and paintings. In addition to doing research, one of the faculties had doctorate with research specialization in the fields of Sedimentology, Geochemistry and Coastal Geology and two faculties were doing their doctoral degrees with the specializations viz., Sedimentology, Marine Geology and Hydrogeology

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
The fore sight and interest of Dr. P.V.G. Raju garu our Patron has made him to introduced the course combination with Geology for the degree students in 1953, in the prestigious College of Maharajah’s of Vizianagaram. This is the first college in South India, which opted Geology in undergraduate level after Madras Presidency College combination with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry i.e., GMP and GPC. Currently the department is offering the Programme for UG(Honors) in Geology.
This Department was started in 1953 under the leadership of Sri D.L. Satyanarayana garu who was a student of Prof. Mahadevan of Andhra University. On the request of Dr. P.V.G. Raju garu, the then he left Andhra University and joined here. He was the founder, Head of Department and developed the Department to the maximum extent and latter he became the Principal of this College in 1976. To straighten the Department he added two more staff members to the faculty. One is Sri M.V. Jagannadha Rao a product from prestigious Benares Hindhu University with post graduate in Geology and Geography who played key role in establishing the new Department. The other member is Sri V.S.R Anjaneyulu, a product from prestigious Madras Presidency College who is responsible for establishing the museum and labs.
From 1953 to 1966 these three faculty members could able to run the department very efficiently. Students from all corners of this State and neighboring States used to come here to study Geology, since this is the only college opted Geology in graduate level courses. After a decade this department is studded with another faculty member Prof. K.K.V.S. Raju in the year 1966 and the department is utilized his services till 1986 and then he elevated as Reader and left to Andhra University and became a Professor. He as a good researcher, guided 14 Ph.D’s to his credit. During 1969 another faculty member Dr. V. Ranga Raju, joined in this department and he left to Nagarjuna University as a Reader and became Professor and Head of the Department and Principal.
During 1976 founder Head of the Department Sri D.L. Satyanarayana garu became Principal of this college and then Sri M.V. Jagannadha Rao garu became the Head of the Department in 1976. During his tenure another English medium section also started parallel. With the services five faculty members this department was highlighted throughout the country and Abroad by giving admission to a foreign student Mr. Clamonds from Nigeria for graduation in Geology and after completion he became the Minister for Mines in Nigerian Government. In 1986 Silver Jubilee of this Department was celebrated. Then Most of the Geological organizations in our country were being headed by the students of this department. Most of them were attended and extended their support to this Department. Sri M.V. Jagannadha Rao garu was expert in arrange Geological Tours to the students. He trained the next faculty members in conducting the Geological Tours. He started Association for Geology Students. The Association used to conduct Seminars, Quiz and Workshops every year. During this time some more faulty members were included like Dr. K. Ramamurthy Raju, Sri C. Jayanth Kumar, Sri D. Arunkumar, Dr. P.A.N. Raju and Dr. U. Padmanabha Raju.
Sri M.V.Jagannadh Rao who was elevated as a Principal of M.R. College in 1987. He played key role in getting the Autonomous status to the college which is the first in Andhra University area. Then Dr. K. Ramamurthy Raju became the Head of the Department in 1987. He served the Department as Head for 20 years. He continued the same traditions of the seniors and he retired from service in the year 2007.
During his tenure Dr. P.V.V. Gopal Raju and Dr. K. Suryanarayana were joined the Department as faculty members in 1996. Both were retired from their service in the years 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Now this Department is being headed by Dr. P. Ganapathi Rao, Assistant Professor and other faculty members Sri T.Sankara Rao and Sri K.Satyanarayana Naidu.
INFRASTRUCTURE/ FACILITIES
A Geology department’s infrastructure typically includes specialized laboratories (like mineralogy, petrology, and paleontology etc.,), a geology museum all essential for teaching and field work.
Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the infrastructure you’d typically find in a Geology department:
Laboratories:
- Mineralogy Laboratory: For studying the composition, structure, and properties of minerals.
- Optical Mineralogy Laboratory:Equipped with advanced microscopes for detailed mineral analysis.
- Petrology Laboratory:For studying the origin, composition, and structure of rocks.
- Palaeontology Laboratory:For studying fossilized remains to understand past life and geological history.
- Crystallography Laboratory:For studying the structure and properties of crystals.
- Specimen Collection:A collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils for educational and research purposes.
- Other Infrastructure:
- Field Equipment: Compasses, GPS devices, and other tools for conducting field studies.
- Computer Facilities: Computers with specialized software for geological modeling, data analysis, and mapping.
- Library: A collection of books, journals, and other resources related to geology and geosciences.
- Classrooms and Lecture Halls with ICT Facilities: For teaching and seminars.
- The optical lab is with 12 petrological Microscopes of German made 3 of which are in condition, The standard of the lab is almost equal to the of University lab. The Microscopes are having original Nicolas instead of Polaroid’s. The lab is having all rock sections and mineral sections for the study.
- The department has excellent museum with University standards. In the museum, rock specimens, minerals specimens and fossils are exhibited in good glass racks. To support the teaching, all crystal models, optical models and structural models were placed in the museum. Rock cycle and water cycle, boards were painted in the museum. The museum is an excellent collection of samples and fossils collected by the students during the Geological tours.
- A Big Index Fossil Ceratite was collected at Tiruchunapalli during the field tour. Some other rare collections during field trip where a big phosphatic Nodule from Tirchur. A big Garnet Crystal showing Rhombododecahedron form. A Plant Fossil from Pondicherry A big barytes from pulivendala. A lignite samples from Nyveli.
