MAHARAJAH VIJAYA RAMA GAJAPATHI RAJ - III
The Maharaja (1826-79) transformed Vizianagaram from that of a power-cantered fortress into a renowned centre of learning and culture. Through visionary reforms, he laid the foundations that established Vizianagaram as an “Educational Center” of lasting distinction.
He began with a middle school in 1857, later elevated to a high school in 1868 which subsequently evolved into Maharaja’s College offering degree programs. M.R. Sankrit College (the present “Govt. Sankrit College”) was also established by the Maharajah in 1860. These institutions together constituted a nucleus for a comprehensive educational framework. Royal fort which is the only visionary fort in contemporary times and its principality in north-costal Andhra.
His generous contribution and vision for education were acknowledged by Alighar Mislim University, Alahabad University, Calcutta Presidency College, University of Banarus, Madras Presidency College etc. The institutions he founded continue to flourish even today, bearing testimony to his enduring vision and commitment to knowledge.
